I mentioned last month about how impressed I was with Google Earth. Now the experience is even better. The company that developed what is now called Google Earth is Keyhole. Google bought them in late 2004. The software allows the public to create their own overlays, placemarks, and all sorts of things. This information augments the satellite photos and geographic information that is stored by Keyhole.
Keyhole has a message board, they call it a BBS, where people post notes about things they find using Google Earth. Here is the good part. The posters are able to post what is called a "KZM" file along with their note. This file is very small and it functions like a smart bookmark. All you have to do is click on it and your Google Earth program will automatically fly over the the area of the earth they want to focus on. It will overlay any information they have provided.
They have board dedicatated to the subject of history. Almost any event you can think of, someone has already found it, added information, and posted a KZM bookmark for it on the board. All you have to do is search for the subject.
For example. This morning I look at Cherynobyl, where the Greeks attacked Troy, a reconstruction of the voyages of Columbus.
It is a lot of fun!
